Planning for the Weather

Mourning Dove

Both on our mini-moon this past November and our honeymoon last month we had rain; different types of rain, but precipitation nonetheless. We visited both locations during the "off season."

On both trips we came prepared - we had umbrellas, we had rain coats. Rain in Calistoga in November is cold. Rain in Puerto Rico ranges from refreshing to a light chill (remember this is me we're talking about - the girl who's perpetually freezing even in 70 degree weather). One miscalculation in my packing was the coat I brought to Puerto Rico. My raincoat was too heavy for the humidity so I ended up leaving it at our rental; my crew workout jacket that I took with me to Costa Rica would have been a better choice.

If you've got your heart set on activities that can only be done in sunny weather, you might be disappointed if you travel to a locale near the end of its Dry season, at the beginning of its Wet season, or during its Wet season. While these times might be more budget friendly, they are because you're taking a risk with the weather. If you can be flexible and book tours the night before or morning of to take advantage of good weather you'll be much happier. We toured Old San Juan on the one day the weather cleared up (check back tomorrow for a trip report.) Our friends toured a nearby rainforest during a light mist (while I visited two volcanoes and hiked a waterfall in downpours in Costa Rica I wasn't keen on doing the same while on our honeymoon).

In addition to being prepared for inclement weather, if you're visiting during the off season. plan to be flexible. Not everything will be open (when we visited Jenner, CA in late December one year most restaurants were closed).

Our only goals for our honeymoon were 1) relax and 2) spend time together. Both of which were accomplished. Yes I really really wanted to see a coffee plantation which didn't happen (we were staying nearly two hours away from the coffee plantations and didn't feel like driving four hours), but it wasn't a deal breaker.

We spent a lot of time at our rental. Due to the weather, Internet was knocked out (our iPhones with AT&T service did work for data) and the house's roof and windows leaked. While relaxing it would have been nice to have room service or cabana service but this would have priced our honeymoon out of reach. (I've discovered that my dream vacation does include a dishwasher. Our rental had a dishwasher but the previous vacationers broke it, as well as the washing machine, the week before we arrived.)

One thing that worked well for us was that minutes away from us were tons of food options at the Loquillo Kioskos (check out our food blog tomorrow for a food tour). Both of us are foodies so exploring the various Kioskos became the main focus of the trip; we ate there four times over a course of a week. Watching the rain while indulging in good food, sipping a sangria and staying dry makes for an enjoyable afternoon and evening.

Did you have rain on your honeymoon?
Did you still have a good time?

Ciao Bella!
